Borodulin broke his right ankle in a fall in practice in November 2007. He came back on to the ice in early January 2008. Borodulin's younger brother Sergei is also a competitive figure skater. He and his brother switched coaches and moved from Perm to Moscow in spring 2006. Coach Elena Buianova (Vodorezova) is the 1983 European silver and World bronze medalist.
