Carriere began skating at age 5 after watching the 1994 Olympic Winter Games with Nancy Kerrigan, who was from his local area in Massachusetts. He has skated in some shows with Kerrigan. His cousin Caroline Hallisey was a U.S. speedskater who competed at the 1998 and 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Coaches Johansson (a National Champion in Sweden) and Mitchell (a National medalist in the USA) both competed at the World level.
