Cantu's bag with her skates was stolen after the Short Program at the 2003 Four Continent Championships. Cantu was able to finish the competition with the skates of her teammate Ingrid Roth. Roth, who had not qualified for the Free Skating, borrowed her skates to Cantu. Cantu's sister Michele (three years younger) is also a figure skater and competed at the 2007 Four Continents Championships.
