Suguri was the first lady from Japan to win an ISU Championship (2001 Four Continents) since Yuka Sato won the Worlds in 1994. Her younger sister Chika was a competitive figure skater and competed at the international level. Suguri switched coaches following the 2006/07 season and has been training in Moscow since spring 2007.
